Gender Roles in Modern Family Modern family is a ongoing TV show that follows the lives of three different families. The first family consists of Jay, his second wife, Gloria, and her son Manny. The second family is made up of Jay’s son Mitchell, his partner, Cam, and their adopted daughter, Lily. The final family consists of Jay’s daughter Claire, her husband, Phil, and their three kids, Hailey, Alex, and Luke. Modern Family sets out to show the everyday lives of these three households and the different situations that they have to deal with in this day and age. Each family member plays a certain role and there are certain things expected of them; a large factor in determining these roles in their gender. People still conform to the stereotypical gender roles in today’s society even when it doesn’t make sense for them to. Phil and Claire are an example of a couple who both follow and transcend the expected gender roles. While gender roles are supposed to be black and white, in reality everyone is just different shades of gray. In the article by Planned Parenthood, it states there are four basic kinds of gender stereotypes, personality traits, domestic behavior, occupation, and physical appearance. In the first episode of the show, we can see that Phil and Claire fit into the expected domestic behaviors and occupations of men and women.
